Apple releases iTunes 11.0.1 with duplicate item finding and other fixes

Here’s the iTunes 11.0.1 release notes from Apple’s support website:

“This update to the new iTunes addresses an issue where new purchases in iCloud may not appear in your library if iTunes Match is turned on, makes iTunes more responsive when searching a large library, fixes a problem where the AirPlay button may not appear as expected, and adds the ability to display duplicate items within your library. This update also includes other important stability and performance improvements.”

If you haven’t tried iTunes 11 yet, you should check it out. It features a redesigned UI, revamped iTunes Store, and some new features like UpNext. It also has a new MiniPlayer, and enhanced iCloud integration.

Apple researching way more visual caller ID with deeper context

Apple has been granted a patent for a sort of intelligent visual caller ID. Like usual, the patent application carries the mundane title of “Image selection for an incoming call”.
In reality, the technique Apple proposes could alert you to the caller’s identity and give you some contextual clues where they are calling from, even their time of day. We can already get an image of a caller, based on the incoming phone number.
But the patent could display an image based on additional filters. For instance, suppose you receive a mid-morning call on the West Coast from someone in Japan. The technology would determine the caller’s location and timezone, and show a photo of the person in the middle of the night. Does this mean I can’t call in sick when I’m actually at the beach?
According to the U.S. Patent No. 8,331,916, first spotted by AppleInsider, one could even determine what picture appears when one’s significant other rings. And by using a star-ratings system, you might downgrade the matching image to one with horns and a mustache.
The method Apple’s researching includes “locating plurality images of the identified caller, and randomly displaying on the mobile telecommunications device’s display screen one or more images from among the located plurality images of the identified caller”.

Apple is looking to pull of another iPhone 4S-like release and would only improve on some little things. According to Misek, the iPhone 5S will be equipped with a better camera. We don’t yet know about the possible MP the camera will have but Megapixels don’t necessarily define how good a camera is. For example, the iPhone 5 has a much better camera than the iPhone 4S despite having the same 8 MP.

Another thing Apple will likely add in the 7^th-Generation iPhone will be an NFC-chip. Android smartphones have been using NFC since a long time and come packed with NFC capabilities which are proving quite promising with dand it was a disappointment for Apple fans when NFC was exempted from the iPhone 5. Well, it’s never too late to add it as Apple usually waits for technologies to mature before using them (like 4G LTE).

And here is the good part, you won’t have to wait long for the iPhone 5S as the release date is possibly set for June. The summer period just got a lot more interesting.

T-Mobile to eliminate handset subsidies ahead of iPhone launch

On Thursday, Deutsche Telekom announced that T-Mobile USA had entered into an agreement with Apple to bring products to market next year. CEO John Legere confirmed the news while speaking at a conference this week, saying that T-Mobile will indeed be carrying the iPhone in 2013, and it will be offering it in a “different” way…

What does he mean by different? Well assumedly, it has something to do with the fact that T-Mobile also recently announced that it will be eliminating handset subsidies by the end of the year. That means that instead of paying $99 or $199, customers will likely be paying full price — so more like $600 — for the iPhone and other devices.

GigaOM has more on Legere’s comments:

“What was missing? A certain number of customers wouldn’t come to the store if we didn’t have the iPhone,” Legere said. “We worked very, very hard for a deal that made sense for us…

…When this device rolls out I can only tell you it will be a dramatically different experience, and I can only tell you that of all the reports that have been written about what’s going to happen when it comes out, they’re all wrong.”

Traditionally, carriers factor handset subsidies into their plans and other monthly fees. That’s why you sign a contract to get the lower price on a phone, and why there’s an early termination fee if you cancel — they have to make sure they make their money back on the device. T-Mobile, however, is moving to a completely different model.

The carrier will shift entirely to its unsubsidized Value Plans, which offer customers far cheaper monthly rates for voice and, particularly, data plans. With its new Value program, T-Mobile is keeping the contract, but passing the money it saves from not subsidizing handsets onto its subscribers. It’s an interesting strategy, but will it work?

It’s hard to tell at this point. But regardless, finally cementing an iPhone deal can’t hurt. T-Mobile will be the last of the four major carriers in the US to offer Apple’s popular handset — a device that it blamed for much of its recent loss of some half a million subscribers.
