How to Transfer SMS and iMessage History Between iOS Devices

SMS folder
If you’re anything like me, you’ve been waiting for the upcoming release of the iOS 6.1untethered jailbreak before you upgraded to the iPhone 5. Upgrading to a new iPhone is exciting, but there are always a kink or two in the process. One of the upgrading issues that always bothers me is the fact that iTunes doesn’t make it easy to copy your text message history to a new device; your only option is to restore from a backup, and that doesn’t always work.
Unfortunately even third party utilities like iTools.hk or CopyTrans Contacts are currently unable to transfer SMS and iMessage history between devices since iOS 5 and up. I was able to find a manual method, but it requires following the process to the letter. The guide also works with the iPad and iPod touch, but these devices will only display iMessages.
In this tutorial, we will show you how to backup your SMS and iMessages, and we will also show you how to transfer these messages from one device to another…
Note: This tutorial is intended to instruct savvy jailbreakers on manually overwriting system files. While I have tested this process with my iPhone 4 and 3rd generation iPad without issue, iDownloadBlog is not responsible if you lose your data while attempting to follow our instructions.
You will require:
First we need to get the iMessage and SMS database files off the old iPhone. This part is fairly straight forward.
Step 1: With your old iPhone connected to your computer, open iFunBox and click on the iFunBox Classic tab.
SMS folder
Step 2: Open your device and access the Raw File System. Navigate to ‘var/mobile/Library/SMS‘. Copy the contents of the SMS folder to your computer. If you don’t care about photo attachments and drafts, you only need to copy sms.db,sms.db-shm, and sms.db-wal. Otherwise copy all the contents.
Now that we have our iMessage and SMS database files backed up, we need to prepare our new device for receiving these files.
icloud sms
Step 3: On your new iPhone or iPad, go into Settings and select ‘Mail, Contacts, Calendars’.
Step 4: Enter the settings page for your iCloud account and disable Contacts from the menu.
Step 5: At this point, open the app switcher and make sure the Messages app is closed. It is very important that you do not open Messages until the process is completed.
Step 6: Plug your new device into your computer, and access var/mobile/Library/SMSin iFunBox. Back up and delete the existing contents of the SMS folder and drag your old phone’s files over. If you’re not copying Attachments and Drafts over, leave the original folders.
SMS highlight
Step 7: Highlight all the files that you just copied over, right-click, and select permissions.
file ownership permissions SMS
Step 8: In addition to setting permissions to 0755, you will also need to change theownership of these files from Root to Mobile. Otherwise, Messages will be unable to access the database files.
Step 9: Reboot your device before launching Messages. If you launched iMessages before rebooting, you will need to repeat the process from Step 6.
Once you reboot, your iMessage and SMS history should work with your new device. If you have any issues, let us know in the comments section.

Evasi0n Will Suport All iOS Devices Running 6.0, 6.0.1, 6.0.2, 6.1

iDevices
The evad3rs just launched their official website a few moments ago, unveiling the name of the 6.x jailbreak: evasi0n. They look to be about 60% done with the hack, as they’re finishing up the GUI and about to start private testing.
The site also divulges some other information regarding the jailbreak, including device and firmware compatibility. And as expected, evasi0n is going to support all iOS devices running iOS versions 6.0 to the just-released 6.1
The exact wording from the new evasi0n website: “Compatible with iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 6.0 through 6.1 (you may check in Settings / General / About => Version).” And here’s a list of all of the devices that qualify.
  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4
  • iPad 2
  • iPod touch 4th generation
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPad 3
  • iPod touch 5th generation
  • iPhone 5
  • iPad mini
  • iPad 4
  • Apple TV 2
Of course, we all know that there isn’t an Apple TV 3 jailbreak yet, and it doesn’t look there’s going to be one anytime soon. And any other device that you don’t see on the list won’t work because they have to be running iOS 6 or higher.

New iOS 6.x jailbreak to be called ‘evasi0n’

By idownloadBlog:-
Screen Shot 2013-01-30 at 4.37.55 PM
The iOS 6.x jailbreak has a name, and it’s ‘evasi0n.’ The evad3rs—a team of hackers made up of musclenerd, pod2g, pimskeks, and planetbeing—have just launched their official website. And their first post is a big one.
Not only does it give the name of the new jailbreak, but it also shows their progress on it, what the requirements will be to run it, and other details…
From the website, under a section labeled ‘Requirements’:
  • 5 minutes of your time!
  • A computer, running Windows (XP minimum), Mac OS X (10.5 minimum) or Linux (x86 / x86_64)
  • An iPhone, iPad or iPod running iOS 6.0 through 6.1 (you may check in Settings / General / About => Version)
  • A USB cable to connect the device to the computer
So it looks like the project is moving along nicely. The site says that the team is in the process of finishing the GUI, and that the next step is private beta testing. And judging by the status bar, it looks like they’re 60% done.
I also found the ‘Credits’ section to be pretty interesting, as it thanks well-known theme designer Surenix and both chronic and iPhone dev teams for their support. Surenix, as most of you know, designed the evad3rs logo.
Finally, it’s worth mentioning that there is a ‘Donate’ button at the bottom of the website, if you would like to contribute. As always, iDB advocates supporting those that put in countless hours of work so we can free our devices.
We’ll let you know as soon as the site is updated, or we receive more information regarding evasi0n. Until then, make sure to check out our post on how to prepare for the upcoming jailbreak.

How To Prepare Your iPhone For The iOS 6.1 Untethered Jailbreak

By ijailbreaknow.com
Yesterday it was a very great day for Apple users, we heard that MuscleNerd and other popular hackers said that Sunday is going to be a funday as they are going to finally release the iOS 6.1 untethered jailbreak which is going to support all the devices except Apple TV 3. But the most important thing it will support Apple’s new iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5G…
Now if you have the intentions to jailbreak your iPhone running on iOS 6.1, you should prepare yourself and your iPhone for the iOS 6.1 untethered jailbreak, you can use these steps that will help you to be safe on iOS 6.1….

Step 1: Evaluate the situation

First, you need to find out whether or not your device is even jailbreakble to begin with. Chances are very high that your device is supported, but it always helps to double check.  In fact, it would be easier to show you which devices are not supported, because that list is smaller than the ones that are.
These devices are not supported:
  • iPhone 2G
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPod Touch 1G
  • iPod touch 2G
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPad 1
  • Apple TV 3
Anything outside of these devices can be jailbroken with the upcoming jailbreak

Step 2: Back it up!

If you aren’t already jailbroken on some older firmware, then this step is easy. Simply use iTunes or iCloud to back up your device. Double check, no triple check, to make sure that everything is safe and secure before you even think about jailbreaking. Do this now, so that you don’t have to do so at the very last minute.
If you’re jailbroken, then you can use a tool like PkgBackup to back up all of your Cydia tweaks and apps.

Step 3: Restore to the iOS 6.1

Once you’ve backed up your device, go ahead and restore to iOS 6.1. If history is anything to go by, I always recommend a fresh and clean installation when preparing for a jailbreak. Yes, you can choose to just do a simple upgrade, but make sure it’s an upgrade using iTunes, not an OTA delta upgrade using the Settings > General > Software update feature found on your device. Again, do not use the software update method found on the iPhone, use iTunes instead. The evad3rs team has recommended this, and in the past, users have had problems when trying to jailbreak delta upgraded firmware. Trust me on this.

Step 4: Read iJailbreakNow

As if we had to tell you this! This week we’ll be hitting you with all kinds of juicy tidbits regarding the most anticipated jailbreak in history, so you don’t want to miss it. We’ll also be making updates to this post as more pertinent information hits the wire, so stay tuned.

Step 5: Get plenty of rest on Saturday

While there’s always the possibility that the jailbreak could be released early, or could be delayed, chances are that it will hit sometime on Sunday. Sunday is relative, though, because the team that comprises the evad3rs has members located across the globe. What might be Sunday for them, might be Saturday, or Monday for someone else. In other words, keep it locked right here, and on our Website, for all of the latest info.

iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak is Ready Pod2g Confirmed

iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak is Ready Pod2g Confirmed
He stated,
“For your information and this is important to me that everybody knows about it also, this jailbreak will be @planetbeing and @pimskeks. I arrived at the end, gave ideas that pushed them to their maximum, I kinda unblocked the situation, but it would certainly have happened without me helping.”
He also informed that he is offering his services to the developers for proper communication, website making and development works. Still, most of the work has been managed by planetbeing and pimskeks.
The hacker also confirmed that the iOS 6.0 is jailbroken in the same way as iOS 6.1 Beta 4. The iOS 6.1 GM is yet to be introduced after which the team will decide if any security measures are required or not. The jailbreak will be finally release once the team has tested everything under their roof.
This is good news for all those people who have been waiting for iOS 6.1 jailbreak. It must be kept in mind that Apple and network carriers have improved the security measures that have caused slow development in jailbreaks, stay tuned on for more update!!

iPad Mini 2 Coming In October, iPhone 5S To Feature Upgraded Camera

iPad Mini 2 Coming In October, iPhone 5S To Feature Upgraded Camera
iLounge has managed to get some info about the next-Gen iPad Mini and iPhone. According to them, the next-iPad Mini(codenamed J85) will be released in October and will feature a Retina display. They have no news regarding other specs but we are expecting an upgraded processor and a slightly increased RAM.
While as far as the iPhone 5S is concerned, iLounge believes that it’ll have a considerably better camera, supposedly the 13 MP camera by Sony. Here is what they say about it,
“The iPhone 5S is still months away from mass production, but our source suspects that the star feature will be an upgraded rear camera—perhaps featuring Sony’s 13-Megapixel sensor, plus the aforementioned flash upgrade—along with a processor bump. Current prototypes are codenamed N51 and N53, with July mentioned as the target date.”

iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak Will Be Released Very Soon Before Releasing iOS 6.1

Greenpois0n.us
iOS 6 untethered jailbreak will be released very soon before releasing iOS 6.1. Jailbreak hackers and developers are about to release iOS 6 untethered jailbreak soon but there is a small thing that prevents them from releasing it now. We have informed you previously that Plantbeing the well knwon hacker and pod2g the the famous developer have reached to a great point of iOS 6 jailbreak but they can't release this publicly. The first reason of not releasing the iOS 6 Jailbreak is the release of iOS 6.1. The main thing that push hackers not to release iOS 6 jailbreak is that Apple will discover the lacuna and vulnerabilities which hackers found and will fix these vulnerabilities on it's new version iOS 6.1. Pod2g and Plantbeing intend to delay releasing iOS 6 untethered jailbreak until Apple release iOS 6.1 officially. Let's read more about iOS 6 untethered jailbreak after the jump.

iOS 6 untethered jailbreak will be released very soon before releasing iOS 6.1 :

Apple has already released four betas of iOS 6.1 and the fourth beta version will expire on the 28th of this month, so it is near reality that Apple will release 5thbeta version or Gold Master version in this week. The GM version is approximately the final version of any iOS release, so it will give developers an idea about the proper iOS 6.1 Jailbreak. So, this time is very critical for iOS jailbreak community.
We are not saying this on any false basis, the famous iOS hacker; Pod2g is also waiting for Apple to release the final version of iOS 6.1. Here’s what he said in his tweet :

From his tweet, it is clearly mentioned that the Jailbreak developers are desperately waiting for iOS 6.1 releases. We can get an idea from this tweet that iOS 6 untethered jailbreak release depends on releasing last version of iOS 6.1 However, if Apple will release GM version in this week, we will surely have iOS 6.1 final release very soon and it also points that we will get iOS 6.1 Jailbreak in the near future, even earlier than you think.

Unlocking Your Phone Without Permission Becomes Illegal Tomorrow: Here’s Why You Should Care

Lifehacker.com
"After this upcoming weekend, you have to ask your phone company if you want to use the phone you (kind of) bought from them on any other carrier's network. You used to be able to ask for, or purchase, or hack your way to an "unlocked" phone, but that will be illegal after Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013.
The Librarian of Congress believes cellphone companies are doing a good enough job of fostering competition in their market, so the era of third-party unlocking is coming to a close.
Back in October 2012, the Librarian of Congress was asked by the Register of Copyrights to examine the exemptions made for certain classes of work under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA. I know what you may be thinking. "This Librarian, and this Register—do they live in giant vine-strewn towers? Do have any special powers if they leave Washington?" That is a good question, but first we must address other things.
The DMCA is an oft-referenced 1998 bill that, while tightening and specifying certain online and digital copyright laws, also allows for certain exceptions. It is the bill that allows YouTube and other sites to avoid never-ending lawsuits over copyright infringement, so long as they take down infringing materials once notified. The DMCA also makes it illegal to circumvent encryption and protection measures on copyright-protected materials—with exceptions.
In October 2012, that Librarian of Congress, tasked with regularly reviewing and determining whether the exceptions to the DMCA are still valid, changed course from previous decisions in2006 and 2010 and determined that, in short, there exists enough unlocked phones, carrier unlocking options, and other options for consumers, such that unsanctioned unlocking of cellphones no longer needed to be a protected right.
The Librarian's decision is not a casual or short read. In its writing, the Librarian weighs the arguments of consumers' groups, digital rights advocates, and generally smaller and pre-paid carriers that would benefit from unlocking against a trade group that represents most major cellular carriers.
On the pro-unlocking side:
Proponents noted that "huge numbers" of people have already unlocked their phones under the 2006 and 2010 exemptions and claimed that ending the exemption will lead to higher device prices for consumers, increased electronic waste, higher costs associated with switching service providers, and widespread mobile customer "lock-in." Although proponents acknowledged that unlocked mobile devices are widely available for purchase, they contended that an exemption is still warranted because some devices sold by carriers are permanently locked and because unlocking policies contain restrictions and may not apply to all of a carrier's devices.
On the cellular side:
CTIA explained that the practice of locking cell phones is an essential part of the wireless industry's predominant business model, which involves subsidizing the cost of wireless handsets in exchange for a commitment from the customer that the phone will be used on that carrier's service so that the subsidy can eventually be recouped by the carrier. CTIA alleged that the industry has been plagued by "large scale phone trafficking operations" that buy large quantities of pre-paid phones, unlock them, and resell them in foreign markets where carriers do not subsidize handsets.
So the Librarian decided in October 2012 to no longer provide a safe space for third-party phone unlocking tools for phones purchased as new. A 90-day window was provided, so those who bought a new phone could still unlock it however they would like, legally. That window is closed on Jan. 26.
You may be able to get your carrier to unlock your phone, either after a 90-day period or when your contract is up. You might discover the pathways to unlocked phones, already well tread by those who broke their glass-backed iPhone 4 or 4S. Or you might just decide that it's not worth the hassle and just ask your smartphone carrier how much it costs to replace or upgrade your phone on their schedule, or to travel abroad at their pricing.
I think that expecting the carriers to maintain a consistent unlocking policy for transactions they've already processed is like asking the scorpion not to sting. I think that the unlocking exception in the DMCA can be revised to prevent "large scale phone trafficking operations" from exploiting loopholes, without cracking down on the guy who broke his $200 phone after 3 months and can't afford a $600 replacement. I think it stinks that the end of this 90-day window garnered only 12 articles that Google News could see today (now there are 13). Maybe there were just too many aspects of Apple's quarterly earnings and stock price to fit in fundamental device rights this week."

T-Mobile launching nationwide HD Voice, plans to cover 100 million people with LTE by 2013

T-Mobile is announcing that its wireless network is now HD voice-compatible nationwide, making it the second major carrier to offer this service. For users with compatible phones (which include the Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One S), the service will offer a higher-quality voice service with reduced background ambient noise. That's not the only network-related news that T-Mobile is announcing — it also says its accelerating its rollout of its LTE network during the first half of the year. By mid-year, the carrier plans to cover 100 million people. We also confirmed with T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray that Las Vegas will be the first city with LTE coverage sometime in the next few weeks. The company was hoping to have it rolled out by CES but wasn't able to make that deadline. Between these announcements and T-Mobile's plan to offer unlimited 4G data without a contract, the carrier is making a major play to differentiate itself from its massive competitors. RELATED ITEMS
